150/365: A good TV show

We have recently gotten hooked on Lost…ugh…that means sleeping at 2am every night as we say “one more show??”

Well, now that we have electricity back, we get to watch some shows, and I love it!  It’s great to be able to sit and chill and enjoy a show.  A simple beauty.

149/365: electricity!!!

We finally got our power back today! Yay! So this evening I’m reveling in the many simple beauties I have been missing the last several days: lights, a garbage disposal and thus an un-clogged sink, a dishwasher, my computer and Lost on Netflix on demand! Woohoo!

148/365: candlelight evenings

We r still without power tonight, so I write to you from my phone…

Tonight’s simple beauty is a candlelit evening with my hubby thanks to Lady Irene (aka Hurricane Irene)

147/365: safety

Today’s simple beauty is safety. Safety of my family, friends and home. We spent last night in the basement hoping none of the extremely tall trees in our yard would fall on our house, and despite hearing what sounded like some loud crashes during the storm, we were pleasantly surprised that there was no major structural damage to the house. Sure, we have several leaks (significant ones!) that we now have to take care of, but at least our roof has no large gaping holes. Unfortunately I can not say the same for some people in the surrounding neighborhoods. We send our well wishes to them as they try to get their lives and houses back in order.

PS- the picture is of our tomato plants which very quickly toppled over from the wind

146/365: company

Weathering the hurricane, I am beyond thankful that neither my husband nor I have to work this weekend and can instead weather the storm together while taking care of our daughter and house. There is no way I could have done all this alone!

145/365: siestas

Today, and the past couple days, I had indulged and allowed Myself to take a nap while R napped. Usually I make myself do all the other things on my to do list. But lately we have been stayin up late thanks to a new found addiction to “Lost” – so I need the sleep. And MAN does it feel good! I don’t get as much done, but I do feel better!

144/365: Baking with my baby

I had lots of fun making cookies with R – it is so cute to see how everything is now “I wanna do it myself!” Well, sometimes its cute… This time it was at least =)

So I enjoyed making with her, letting her mix and get her hands (and the kitchen) dirty. And then of course, enjoying the cookies afterwards! They were the best ever!

143/365: an unexpected dip in the pool

Today our friends came over to hang out for a little bit in the morning.  We went outside to look at the garden and were enticed by the pool and the beautiful sun shining on it, so got in!  I have been feeling so guilty that we have been paying for this pool but barely using it.  So I’m thankful for the motivation to get in and enjoy it this morning!  It was great!

142/365: a park outing

a warm walkway in the forest with a white picket fence

we went to the park this morning and met a friend there.  it was so great to be outside and watch R do imaginary play.  we also took her new bike (a training bike without pedals here she can glide and get used to keeping her balance) and she did a good job of riding it around!  or at least walking it around =)

141/365: A day at home with my baby

Even though I work part time, the last month has been particularly crazy. Today I got to spend the day at home with my daughter R for the first time in 4 weeks. It was SO wonderful. We ran errands together, played, and just had a good time. Of course, she did her fair share of pushing my buttons =) and not listening to what I would say…but hey, it’s all part and parcel, right? I’m thankful for the day because it was awesome to take it leisurely and spend it with R.  I bought her some really cool sunglasses and shoes…I’ll have to take a picture of those for you tomorrow!

140/365: just a great day

Today we had a great day together as a family. We woke up leisurely, went into the city for brunch with our friends, I took a nap (heavenly!) and R took an extra long nap, then we went to get ingredients for dinner and made a new recipe: Chinese eggplant using the eggplants from our garden. Now we are both watching Lost and doing stuff on our computers. Nothing incredibly exciting, but just a great relaxing day during which we were able to spend good time together and enjoy each other’s company. Actually, I think the best part was after dinner, when R’s tummy was FINALLY full, and as a result she was in a spectacular mood. She was full form, playing, role playing and having a good time. It was the perfect ending to the day!

139/365: family bike rides

We just bought a new bike trailer for R to sit in, and we went on our first bike ride with her! I’m embarassed that it is our first ride in 2 years…but better late than never. We discovered this AMAZING park near us that had a trail running along side a river that was shaded and beautiful. We even stopped half way and sat on the rocks alongside the river to eat our lunch. R loved it and in fact, fell asleep by the end! It was AWESOME!

138/365: big brothers

While visiting in Miami, R had a lot of fun playing with her big brother K. I love this moment when she wanted to watch him play his DSI. She was so enthralled by what he was doing. And he was so excited to show her!

137/365: new experiences

We took R bowling for the first time…or as she likes to call it: “golf.”. It was very cool to see her learn the rules and how to play so fast! After we finished she said, “can we play golf again?”

136/365: Girl time for the little ones

Inspired by my recent mani/pedi, I had requests from the girls to color their toes as well. I figure every once in a while on vacation cant, hurt, right? So, I indulged them. There was a definitely pleasure in partaking in this simple past time with my daughter and niece. It was really cute. And they got a kick out of the fact that we all had matching toes!

135/365: good ol pampering

Today I treated myself to my first mani/pedi in years. It felt awesome! What made it even better was that my cousin was with me so we could talk and catch up!

So today’s simple beauty is pampering and “me” time 😉

134/365: A good babysitter

I am visiting my family, and am so thankful for my niece who is the best babysitter for R.  She plays with her, takes care of her, and keeps her occupied all the time!  So I get a chance to chill and read.  Love it =)

133/365: earplugs that work

As I tried to sleep-in in a house with many kids and guests and in a room which might as well be open air to the kitchen, I found myself marveling in the wonder of earplugs.

…i know the picture doesnt really match..i just like it =)

132/365: planes, trains and automobiles

We are going for a short weekend trip to visit my sister and parents, and while up in the air, I couldn’t help but think about how amazing planes are and how I’m so Thankful for how they enable us to visit family that is far away!

131/365: thinking out of the box

We have been trying to figure out how to add a bedroom to our house, and have not come up with many great ideas. But Today, we had an old friend and contractor stay with us and asked his opinion. Thanks to his thinking totally out of the box, he gave us the perfect solution! Yay!

…now we just have to do it…

130/365: Music music music

i am sitting in my bedroom working on a present for my sister’s bday.  Sitting here with me are my husband and his brother.  We are all doing our own things, but we are all also listening to some AWESOME music (of all different types – retro 80s, synthesizer stuff, 60’s simon and garfunkel, naked and famous, foster the people…) on really great speakers that he brought with him.  i LOVE it.  we don’t listen to music enough!

129/365: my garden tomatoes

today i made pomodoro sauce for the whole fam out of about 25 of our roma and san marzano tomatoes and 2 handfuls of fresh basil. and don’t forget the garlic chives and thyme that went into the garlic butter spread!

it was awesome =)

128/365: mom’s tender love and care

have not been feeling well. today i came home from work and couldn’t muster the energy to do anything but sit on the sofa under blankets. luckily my mom was in town, and she took care of everything, including making me soup. i was in heaven.

there is nothing like a mom’s love!

127/365: Compassion

Today is going on day 9 of me feeling like crap…bad cold, nose so stuffed it is giving me a headache and keeping me up all night.  After dinner I laid down and R came up to me to ask me what’s wrong.  I told her I didn’t feel well.  So she said – are you ok mommy? And started to try to feel my forehead and check my temperature.  It was so precious.  Thanks baby!
